PE’s Women in Pétanque (WIP) group have just published their latest newsletter and a superb read it is too!
Since this initiative was set up in late 2017, great strides have been made in promoting our sport to women and the new International Women’s Day (IWD) Doubles launched in 2019 has proven to be extremely popular with around 100 doubles teams competing in regional events to qualify for the Finals where 32 teams gathered at Oxshott Pétanque Club.
A great feature in the WIP newsletter tells the inspiring stories of women in our sport and in the latest edition, one of our growing young talents, Ella Slade posed some questions to Hassi Leverett and Sarah Huntley. It’s well worth reading what Hassi and Sarah had to say.
The newsletter of course notes the groundbreaking result for Emma Longstaff and Sammy Thatcher in the Women’s Doubles at the recent World Championships. Both these players started at a young age at the grassroots level of our sport and they show what can be achieved by hard work and application….and a little help from mentors and coaches.
It feels like things are certainly moving in a really positive direction for women in our sport and maybe you know a friend or work colleague that would like to join in and learn to play. Why not take then to a pitch near you soon?
